At Grazia HQ, we’re big fans of Mischa Barton (and her range of bags) so imagine our delight when we heard she was opening her first ever store dedicated to clothes, bags AND make-up! Last night, we joined the former OC star and a fashionable east London crowd to cut the ribbon at her first flagship store in the achingly cool Shoreditch.

Inside the chic, Biba-esque store, leggie lovelies and one James Middleton (uh-huh) sipped on Johnnie Walker cocktails and ate salmon canapés as Mischa showed us around. While guests downstairs were treated to an acoustic performance by indie band Coonan Mockasin, we managed to catch up with the actress/model/designer to discuss London, inspirations and who is the Mischa Barton girl.

Grazia Daily: You’ve had eight successful seasons of your handbag line but when did you decide to take the plunge and open your own store?

Mischa Barton: We’ve been in development since last year and it’s been quite an adventure. We wanted to build on the success of the handbags and it was a very natural progression. It’s quite hard to get a store here so when we got it, I was very happy.

Grazia Daily: What attracted you to Spitalfields?

Mischa Barton: This part of London has so much history behind it. I love the area, especially the market on Thursday, and the general creative energy. I try and walk through here as much as I possibly can. For me it’s like proper London and it gives you that feeling when you walk around at night. It’s the perfect place. West London was quite scary for me and wasn’t where I felt the brand was at that moment, but we can grow to it.

Grazia Daily: We know you for your bohemian and eclectic style, but where do you get your influences from?

Mischa Barton: It’s literally what I’m into at the moment and where I am. I get my influences from books, movies, music and my travels around the world. I’m constantly taking pictures of things that I like. You have to keep it fresh and interesting and I’m always looking for ideas for the bags and the clothes. It’s been an easy endeavour and I really enjoy doing it. It’s very rewarding.

Grazia Daily: Can you pin down the archetypal ‘Mischa Barton’ girl?

Mischa Barton: Girls who are distinct with their fashion choices and want to be a different – they’re quite sophisticated. We cater for the 16-35 market and I’ve found that we reach a lot of older women too. The items on sale are at a good price range, but I’m still shocked that the younger generation buy into it. They’re so into it and aware of The OC. I’m like ‘you’re too young to have seen The OC’ – it’s bizarre and never seems to die, but it’s great. That’s the beauty of DVD.

Grazia Daily: You’ve been a busy lady of late with new films in the pipeline and the upcoming play (Steel Magnolias) in Dublin, but what’s next?

Mischa Barton: Acting is always my first love but I enjoy working hard. We plan to expand and we’re looking at Asia and the Middle East, so we’ll see how that goes. The most important thing for me in opening in London was getting the look and feel of it down. Hopefully we can duplicate this in other territories.

This picture shared by Mischa’s Place on Facebook gave me a little hit of Mischa fan pride, so I wanted to post about it. It’s a preview of the carry bags for Mischa’s upcoming boutique in Spitalfields. I guess it’s one of the finishing touches as everyone prepares for the actual opening – which as far as I know is still date pending.

It’s very cool to see the whole idea of the store come to fruition, especially considering this isn’t some ginormous corporation pulling their million dollar strings to open everything. It’s Mischa, her mum, and the obviously very dedicated Mischa’s Place team bringing everything to life in a naturally evolving and step-by-step way. Wishing everyone involved the best of luck with the forthcoming grand opening of Mischa Barton Boutique London!

Here is a little sneak peek at Mischa’s upcoming store/boutique in London’s Spitalfields area. The Facebook page for the store was just very recently updated with a teaser for a forthcoming grand opening announcement:

Getting closer to our GRAND OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! We are working on making the store amazing for our customers.

These particular photos were taken during the middle of May so I’m sure the store has progressed even further by now. The preview of the interior looks amazing! Can’t wait to see it all up and running.

DUBAI — Mischa Barton is turning her focus to fashion design.

The sometime actress and regular tabloid fodder launched her contemporary collection, Mischa, at an event in Dubai Mall’s Rivaage Boutique Wednesday night.

The signature apparel line, a collaboration with her mother, Nuala, is reminiscent of the retro Bohemian style the actress made famous while starring on the hit show “The O.C.” from 2003 to 2006.

The collection features feminine dresses, vintage-style skirts and cardigans, jumpsuits, leggings and signature pieces like the Mischa jacket. Barton said she’s still very much focused on acting, but

the fashion line “gives me an opportunity to take out my creative energies.”

The pieces, manufactured in China, retail for between $45 and $450. The collection had a soft launch two months ago online, selling out within days without any marketing. “It’s for women ranging from 15 to 35. There are different pieces that will appeal to different styles, but the main thing is I wanted it to feel functional and easy to wear,” Barton told WWD. “My sister, who’s 36 and a barrister in London, wears a lot of it.”

This is Barton’s second trip to Dubai. She came for the lavish launch party of the Atlantis Hotel on the Palm Jumeirah in 2008. She described her visit as “one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”

She returned to Dubai to launch her collection because there was a strong demand for her accessories line, which she has been designing since 2009. “It wasn’t even available in this market, but women really made a great effort to get the bags,” she said.

Next up for actress-turned-entrepreneur is a 1,000-square-foot store opening in London’s Spitalfields area next month. The store, which she said has a “vintage feel,” will carry her clothing and accessories line as well as a range of Mischa Barton-branded cosmetics. “I’m not looking at being mass market. I’d like to grow the business organically,” she said.

This venture is very much a family business for Barton. Her mother is managing the business aspects of the brand and said it is fully a family-run business and, at the moment, they have no outside investors. They plan to grow the business in whatever direction the demand dictates. “Before we’ve even launched the London flagship, we’ve gotten requests for franchises in China,” said Nuala Barton.

She added they hope to bring the line to the U.S. by the end of the year.
