L.A. Slasher was originally slated for a June 12 theatrical release at select AMC Theatres in North America. However, an updated press release has advised that the release date has been pushed to June 26 to allow for a wider release. Check out the press release below:

ARCHSTONE DISTRIBUTION AND AMC THEATRES SHIFT RELEASE OF “L.A. SLASHER” IN NORTH AMERICA TO JUNE 26, 2015
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 29, 2015) – Archstone Distribution has announced that the horror-dark comedy feature L.A. Slasher, directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger, will receive a North American theatrical release starting June 26 in select AMC Theatres.

“With growing public interest, AMC is expanding the release of the film,” L.A. Slasher Executive Producer Abigail Wright stated. “The number of cities are growing, and thus far include Los Angeles, Denver, Miami, Atlanta and Austin, with more to be announced soon.”

L.A. Slasher Producer Daniel Sollinger remarked, “My team and I are thrilled to be working with Archstone and AMC, as they have a steady track record for bringing high quality films to audiences worldwide. We are very proud to be on their roster.”

With an all-star cast that includes Mischa Barton, Dave Bautista, Danny Trejo, Drake Bell, Eric Roberts, Brooke Hogan, Abigail Wright, Elizabeth Morris and Andy Dick (in his comeback
vehicle), L.A. Slasher is a social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous. Exploring why it has become acceptable to become an influential star based on no merit or talent, the story follows the titular Slasher character as he systematically abducts these “stars,” much to the joy of the online public who view his exploits via social media, and who subsequently and enthusiastically support his mantra of ‘Death To Reality TV’.

Already a recipient of multiple awards on the film festival circuit, L.A. Slasher is being described as, “A ‘meta’ morality tale for the Age of Twitter” (via ShockTillYouDrop.com) and, “A visual juggernaut” (via TrulyDisturbing.com).

Continuing our coverage of Mischa’s latest movie Deserted (so current, it just wrapped production a few weeks ago), director Ashley Avis has very kindly taken time out of her week to answer a few questions for us.

What we have with this project is something a little different to normal in the sense that Ashley was not only the director, but also the writer, location scout and I’m sure a million other things. Additionally, most of the crew were friends or relatives, so even in just my brief contact with Ashley, you can tell that a lot of heart and soul was put into the production of this film. That alone makes it one to watch.

As I mentioned, the movie has just wrapped production so we’re still a little while away from getting release info, but I hope the following Q&A gives you a glimpse into the making of the movie. I’m sure that after reading it through, you’ll be looking forward to seeing the finished film just as much as me.

qadeserted
Deserted seems to be a passion project of yours, how long did it take you to write the script and then get the movie off the ground and into production?

It’s definitely a passion project – absolutely.  I’ve written dozens of drafts of this script over the past three, three and a half years.  As scripts do, Deserted has morphed and changed, ebbed and flowed.

It took about that amount of time (approximately three years) for both financing, and the right team to click into place as well.

What was your inspiration behind the screenplay?

Death Valley, first and foremost.  A cinematographer I used to work with years ago showed me photos of Death Valley – the outstandingly, varying topography.  Sand dunes, salt flats, mountains, pinnacles – I desperately wanted to shoot something, anything in a place like that.

Most of the screenplays I write start with a location, first.  A place – a theme – and then the characters crawl out of the woodwork.  I love finding them, weaving them.  Watching them talk.  The only thing in Deserted that’s particularly close to home for me is the relationship between Jae and Robin – I’m very close to my younger brother.

We’re excited to see Mischa film a movie helmed by a female director, how did Mischa’s involvement come about?

Thank you, that’s very kind.  Jae is an incredibly complex character, and we needed an actress that could really dig deep into her psychologically.  When we met with Mischa at our home in Venice – she came in with this beautiful openness and great story thoughts and questions about the script.  We were all incredibly impressed.

As soon as Mischa was cast, she immediately flew into her process of getting into and understanding her character.  She did a huge amount of research about women who had been incarcerated, the psychology of a character like Jae.  Mischa was also great to work with on set – she worked incredibly hard, we were constantly talking about finding the truth in the dialogue and the character dynamics.  Her performance truly matches how much she gave herself to the role.  She was outstanding.

Check out out the trailer for Mischa’s upcoming feature film Starcrossed also starring Grant Harvey, Eric Roberts and Kristin Carey. The movie will have its premiere at the San Diego Film Festival in a few days.

Also, here is an excerpt from an interview talking about Mischa’s involvement with the film.

Casting was the first task. Reed had Barton in mind because of the English roots of both the character and the actress. Once Barton had “loved” the script and signed on, they auditioned a ton of young male leads in LA, trying to find the right fit and the right chemistry.

Reed said that when Harvey and Barton were in a room together it was instantly “electric,” and they knew they had found their leads.

Reed said he thinks the movie is the best performance Barton has ever done, and he believes that Harvey, best known for a role on the TV show “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” is going to be a big star. Part of what makes their performances so good are Mohseni’s words, he said.

“What he wrote is so rich and so deep,” he said of the script, which he called darkly romantic, following two lost souls who make a connection over a matter of hours.

The film was shot over 16 days at the end of October 2013. Post-production work started in January, the beginning of a long march until just this week when all the details on the final cut were finished.

Check out the teaser trailer for Mischa’s upcoming role in L.A. Slasher. The trailer is really well done and makes the movie look like a lot of fun, can’t wait!

We are still currently awaiting details of a release date, but with distribution pretty much locked in, it shouldn’t be too far away. You can also read an excerpt from the press release below.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 18, 2014) – A new trailer has been released for the up-and-coming film “L.A. Slasher,” directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger (“Girls Against Boys”, “The Alphabet Killer”). The satire, which is making waves in social media, has also recently been picked up by Archstone Distribution to handle its international sales.

The film offers a tongue-in-cheek review of reality TV, and the undue admiration for people who are famous for simply being famous. In the feature, the L.A. Slasher publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars, while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them. “L.A. Slasher” explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent – purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior.

USA Today has shared the trailer from one of Mischa’s upcoming movies Mining for Ruby.

It appears as though the movie will be available for download via VOD from August 1st. Mischa only shot for this movie for a very short time, so it appears that she’ll likely only have limited screen time.

Mining for Ruby unearths love, Alaskan style.

Directed by Zoe Quist, the indie drama — on video on demand beginning Aug. 1 — stars Daniel Ponickly as a widower named Jack who’s in a downward spiral of depression, and Antoinette Kalaj is Ruby, a grad student studying environmental engineering in the 49th state, where the movie was actually filmed.

After incessant persuading from his sister (Mischa Barton), Jack finally leaves the cozy confines of his cabin in Alaska and luckily meets and falls quickly for Ruby. However, this love story is not destined to be an easy one — she not only has a psycho ex (Jonathan Bennett) who likes a good scrap but Ruby also throws the whole town into a tizzy when, against the advice of her professor (Billy Zane), she inadvertently gets embroiled in a poisonous waste crisis.

Here is the teaser poster for Mischa’s upcoming role in Cloudland co-starring Drew Fuller, Katie Parker and Adi Shankar.

Via Fangoria:

Whether or not they’re are familiar with his name, horror fans definitely know the output of screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick. Having conceptualized the FINAL DESTINATION franchise as well as written the scripts for TAMARA and the 2008 remake of DAY OF THE DEAD, Reddick now hopes to further his prolific presence in the horror genre with his newest project, CLOUDLAND.

Aiming to become the feature length debut of short-form director Alex Bram, CLOUDLAND follows an investigative reporter on the heels of a cult’s prophecy following the murder of his young sister, which may be paranormal in nature. Reddick is overseeing the production as executive producer, with writing duties going to Bram and Martin Aguilera.

CLOUDLAND also sports an impressive cast, including Drew Fuller (CHARMED), Adi Shankar (THE VOICES), Katie Parker (ABSENTIA) and Mischa Barton (THE SIXTH SENSE). The film, set to lens in Los Angeles this fall, also will include the work of SFX team PRPVFX, who left their mark on the horror genre in last year’s splattery EVIL DEAD remake. You can see the first poster for CLOUDLAND below, and keep an eye out for more updates on CLOUDLAND as they come.
